Knit a Square
Each year the North Jersey Fiber Arts Festival sponsors a project that weaves us into the interdependent web of the world’s community. In 2009 the world’s longest scarf benefited the good work of Heifer International; in 2010, we knitted and crocheted Duduza dolls on behalf of Our Chance International (OCI), a humanitarian organization which advocates and provides for the medical needs of disadvantaged children worldwide. This year our project is knit a square.
Knitting and Crocheting for Charity
is an Act of Compassion and Love
Knitting and crocheting for charity, especially for children in need, is a meditative act of love.
More importantly, it makes a difference. There are many millions of
abandoned and vulnerable children and AIDS orphans in southern Africa, who
live in dire poverty.

Many lack the very basics we take for granted—love, shelter, food and education. Your knitting and crocheting for charity can provide an extra dimension, warmth.
The knit-a-square project was started as a family project in 2008 and is now a registered charity under the name of KasCare. Please join the KAS community to help warm and comfort the AIDS orphans of southern Africa by knitting or crocheting one or more 8 inch squares.
The squares we knit and crochet for this project add to the many thousands of 8 inch (20cm) squares from around the world that are joined into blankets, hats and vests and then distributed to the children.
The finished projects add more than warmth to the children’s lives. Ronda, co-founder of KasCare, said in a South African press interview:
“ They are a currency we use to tell the children exactly how beloved they are. We tell them they are the future, unique and special.”
Thank you,
thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
Our challenge now is getting your squares to OCI so that they can be made
into blankets and garments. It is very costly, something that we did
not anticipate. We are gladly accepting contributions to help with the
mailing costs.
